Although all women develop breasts during puberty, not all women are always satisfied with how those breasts develop or the changes the breasts go through during pregnancy and childbirth. It’s perfectly common for women to want to alter the size or shape of their breasts to achieve the image of themselves they want. At My Cosmetic Clinic in Crows Nest or Sydney CBD we are proud to offer breast augmentation surgery so you can join the hundreds of thousands of Australian women who have benefited from breast implants.

What Does Breast Augmentation Mean?

Breast augmentation is any type of plastic surgery that alters the appearance of the breasts. This typically means that the size, shape, and projection of the breasts are tailored with breast implants, but augmentation can also refer to replacing breasts after mastectomies or correcting naturally asymmetrical breasts.

What Choices Will You Need to Make About Your Breast Augmentation Surgery?

After you find a reputable plastic practitioner, you will need to make several decisions about your augmentation surgery. These decisions will determine the outcome of your augmentation, so it’s important for you and your plastic practitioner to have a comprehensive consultation to make choices that are ideal for your current physique and your future goals. Some choices you will need to make will include:

Implant Type

The type of implant you have refers to the material that fills the implant. You will have the choice between a saline or silicone fill. Both implant types will have a rubber-like silicone outer shell, but the type of fill will determine the way the breasts will feel. Silicone implants tend to have a more natural feel and weight.

Silicone vs Saline: Which Is Safer?

The way the implants feel is not the only factor to consider when choosing your implant type. For example, you might want to choose the implant type that is generally safer. Although both implant types are clinically safe, some people believe that saline implants are safer because, in the case of a rupture, the saline will be safely reabsorbed into the body.

Implant Size

The size of your implant will determine how much larger your breasts are after your augmentation. Most women prefer to increase their breast size by one or two cups. Your practitioner will help you select the implant size that will look the most natural on your body frame.

Implant Texture

The texture of your implant is more of a logistical question than anything else and it has a lot to do with your relative level of activity. A smooth implant has a slightly thinner shell and a smooth surface that allows it to move more freely under your breast tissue even after healing. A textured implant has a thicker shell and a rougher surface that binds to breast tissue during healing, which makes the movement of the implant more static.

Smooth vs Textured: Which Should You Choose?

The choice of your implant texture will need to be determined by your lifestyle. If you are very active, it might be better to choose a textured implant for the sake of comfort during your activities, as a textured implant will remain in place.

Implant Shape

The implant shape is an important feature that will dictate how natural-looking your augmentation will appear. Round implants are circular and have an even fill all the way around, which will give your breasts a higher and more forward-projecting appearance.

Teardrop implants, on the other hand, are also called anatomical implants because they mimic the natural shape of the breast, with a heavier fill at the bottom of the implant and a lighter fill at the top.

Implant Placement

You will also need to decide on the placement of your implant, which will also determine how natural-looking the end result is. You will have the choice of implants being placed above the muscle, below the muscle, or between the muscle (dual plane).

Above-muscle implants are ideal for women who have plenty of natural breast tissue, while below-muscle implants are a good option for women who have little natural breast tissue.

Is Breast Augmentation Safe?

Augmentation is a surgical procedure, which means it involves the use of general anesthesia, invasive surgical techniques, and a certain amount of recovery time. Any surgery involving general anesthesia comes with its own risk factors, so it’s important that patients are healthy enough to tolerate the surgery.

Most women are recovered enough to return to most normal daily activities within 2 to 6 weeks, and others are fully recovered after 8 to 12 weeks. And contrary to popular belief, your recovery period will be intensely uncomfortable. Recovery is more about allowing your body to work with the new shape and size and protect the new implants early on.

Who Are Good Candidates?

Women seek augmentation for several reasons. Aside from not being satisfied with the appearance of natural breasts, women also may seek augmentation to better fit into clothes, to increase self-confidence, and to feel more womanly. You are likely a good candidate for this surgery if you are medically able to tolerate general anesthesia and invasive surgery. The best candidates for this surgery include women who want to:

  • Increase breast size
  • Correct breast shape
  • Have fuller breasts
  • Restore breast position and shape
  • Enjoy natural-looking results
