What are Fractional Lasers?

Fraxel laser treatment is a quick, comfortable laser procedure with little downtime, it is used for resurfacing and improving the overall appearance of your skin.  A fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, and the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing, and stimulates new collagen, adding firmness and resilience to the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing targets the outermost (epidermis) and the second layers of the skin (dermis) by delivering laser light beams in small deep columns into the skin. These light beams target a small fraction of the skin at any one time expelling old pigmented epidermal cells and promoting the regeneration of collagen.

Since fractional laser treatment targets small microthermal treatment zones (MTZs), the surrounding skin tissue remains intact which results in faster recovery. The surrounding healthy tissue around the area being treated helps in promoting faster recovery so you can expect minimal downtime from fractional skin resurfacing.

Who Can Benefit From
Laser Resurfacing Treatment

Pollution, UV rays, Hormones and other factors naturally take a toll on your skin over time but the effects can be minimized with laser resurfacing.   Sydney residents with any of the following skin concerns can take advantage of fractional laser treatment to get rejuvenated and healthier skin.

  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Facial lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Photodamage

Laser skin resurfacing is also effective in boosting collagen production, shrinking pore size and improving the overall appearance and texture of the skin. This treatment can also be used on any part of the body including the neck, chest and hands making it a good option if you want to treat different parts of your body for acne scars, issues with skin tone and more.

Fractional Lasers vs.
Other Facial Lasers

There is a wide range of laser treatments available for skin rejuvenation but fractional lasers stand out. The main benefits of fractional lasers include:

  • Suitable for all skin types: No matter what your skin type is, fraxel lasers are a safe, non-invasive treatment for skin rejuvenation. This treatment causes minimal tissue damage and has minimal melanocyte stimulation making it safe even for darker skin tones.
  • Better safety and downtime profile: compared to other types of laser treatments, fraxel laser treatment allows for faster healing since it only targets small sections of the skin at a time. This means less downtime for recovery.
  • Versatile: Fraxel laser resurfacing can be used safely and effectively on multiple areas including the face, neck, chest and hands.

What Does Fractional Laser Treatment Involve?

Getting any kind of skin treatment can be a bit daunting if you do not know what to expect. However, when getting skin resurfacing treatment, Sydney residents can rest assured that our team of experts will provide a friendly, safe and efficient service.

Preparation and assessment

Before the laser treatment, your therapist will assess your skin and identify the specific areas to be treated. They will then make recommendations for your treatment plan based on your particular skin condition.

Any question you may have about the procedure; expected results and downtime, will be discussed to ensure that you are fully informed about what to expect.  Your therapist may also require any information about your medical history to ensure the procedure is as safe for you as possible.

It is recommended to avoid sun exposure for two weeks prior to and post your treatment as the sun’s UV rays can create skin sensitivity and potential hyperpigmentation.  We highly recommend applying an SPF of 50 or more to protect the skin daily from UV rays.

Treatment

On the day of your treatment, your therapist will go over the treatment details with you once again.

We will begin with a thorough cleanse of the skin. Once the treatment area is cleaned, an anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area to ensure the process is as gentle and comfortable as possible.

Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, usually within ten minutes, the anaesthetic cream will be removed and a gliding gel is applied.

The fractional laser then begins and the procedure takes at least 30 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.

Post-Treatment and Recovery

Once the treatment is complete, the gliding gel will be removed. At this stage it is normal to experience a mild tingling sensation and a flushed complexion, however, this should resolve within an hour or so.

In most cases, any swelling or skin irritation experienced after the procedure should resolve in 2 to 3 days. Your skin may also have a pinkish tone after the procedure but this will also resolve in a couple of days.

You may notice that your skin starts to flake or shed after 24 hours. Most patients experience small scabbing and flaking of the skin due to the micro-injury created by the treatment. This is a normal and wonderful process, as the skin tissues are actively working to be renewed. Keeping your skin moisturized will help ease the flaking.

As your skin heals from this process, it is important to use sunscreen with an SPF50+ and keep sun exposure to a minimum for up to four weeks after treatment.

Yes, fraxel laser treatment is safe for most people and has minimal side effects. Swelling, flaking and reddening of skin are possible side effects of the skin resurfacing treatment but they will typically resolve in 5 to 7 days following treatment.

A single treatment session is enough to show visible improvement in your skin. However, you may need up to four to five treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimal improvement in your skin condition. Based on your condition and desired results, the doctor will advise on the appropriate number of treatments.

Yes, laser skin treatment is suitable for darker skin. Compared to other types of laser treatments, the fractional laser is less abrasive since it targets a small fraction of the skin at a time. This means it induces minimal melanocyte stimulation so the risk of hyperpigmentation is lower.

For safe and gentle skin resurfacing, Sydney residents can opt for fraxel skin treatment since it is non-invasive and has minimal side effects. This treatment is well tolerated by most people, but in some cases, you may experience the following side effects.

  • Scaling or flaking of skin
  • Swelling of the treated areas
  • Tightness
  • Hyperpigmentation or skin tone changes in some cases

In most cases, these side effects will resolve in 2 to 3 days, but you can consult the doctor if you have any persistent side effects after your laser resurfacing treatment.

On average, it will take about 5 to 7 days for your skin to heal after the laser treatment. You may experience flaking, redness and swelling in the first 2 to 3 days after swelling but this will gradually resolve after the first week.
