Struggling with blackheads, large pores, uneven skin tone, acne or sun spots? These are some of the most common issues that get in the way of smooth, flawless skin. In the past, many would go for facials and the discomfort of popping blackheads and exfoliation treatments to reveal the unblemished skin underneath. However, modern cosmetic treatments have made solving these problems a lot easier. Chemical Peels are a treatment designed to improve skin texture and quality for the face and various body parts like arms, legs, neck and chest. Suitable for all skin types, chemical peels are a quick, non-invasive and cost-effective treatment for a range of skin concerns.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to your skin, which causes the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This reveals smoother, younger-looking skin, improving appearance and getting rid of spots and discolouration. Chemical skin peels break down surface skin cells and create temporary microscopic openings between the cells. This allows the peels to reach the deeper layers where they can be more effective.

Chemical peels have varying strengths, from light to medium for superficial skin concerns to deep for more dramatic results. The solution can contain different acids. Your practitioner will recommend the most suitable one based on your skin concerns and the desired outcome. For optimal results, multiple sessions may be required.

Here’s a breakdown of the different types of peel strengths:

Light Chemical Peels

Light or superficial chemical peels gently exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. They are great for quick skin rejuvenation and minor concerns like fine lines and improving overall skin texture. Light peels take about 1 to 6 days to heal with minimal downtime.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium-depth chemical peels penetrate both the outer layer and the middle layer (dermis) of the skin. They provide deeper exfoliation than superficial peels, making them suitable for treating skin tone concerns such as sun damage, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Medium peels may involve more redness and take about 7 to 14 days to heal.

Deep Chemical Peels

Deep chemical peels reach the deeper dermal layer of the skin. These peels offer significant exfoliation and can help with more serious skin concerns, including deep wrinkles or scars. Due to their depth, deep peels require substantial downtime for the skin to heal. New skin will take time to grow, and redness may last a few months. Deep peels take longer to heal.

Results after peels can be visible after one or two treatments. However, it takes three months for optimal results for your skin to show complete transformation, as more than one session may be needed for complete rejuvenation. Redness and the new skin appearing darker or lighter as it heals is normal, and it takes a few days to months to retain its natural look, depending on the type of peel used.

Sunscreen, moisturiser and avoiding UV rays are essential to protect your skin after treatment.

Benefits of Chemical Peels for Different Skin Types

Some of the benefits of chemical peels include:

Oily Skin

Chemical peels help control excess oil production by exfoliating the skin and unclogging pores. They naturally dry out the skin, making it less oily, reducing blackheads, pores and dullness and preventing acne breakouts. Repeat treatments also help with clogged pores, promoting a more even skin tone, improved texture and fresher skin.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can look dull and is more prone to wrinkles and sagging because of less hydration. Chemical peels remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and collagen. This enhances moisture retention and allows hydrating ingredients to penetrate more effectively, leaving the skin smoother, softer, and well-nourished.

Acne-prone skin

Chemical peels unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and control acne breakouts. Medium to deep chemical peels can also help lessen minor acne scarring by removing dead cells and allowing the new skin to surface. Regular peels can contribute to a clearer complexion and improved skin texture.

Ageing Skin

Chemical peels stimulate collagen production and promote skin renewal by exfoliating dead skin cells. Medium to deep peels can provide anti-ageing benefits by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots to unveil glowing, radiant and younger-looking skin.

Uneven Skin Tone

Uneven skin tone is often a result of sun damage, pigmentation and dark spots. By removing the built-up outer layers of the skin, you can treat these problems to get a more even tone with softer and brighter skin. Combining chemical peels with an effective skincare routine and products can help maintain the results.

Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin may hesitate before getting a chemical peel, often opting for their milder counterparts, like fruit enzyme peels. However, milder chemical peels provide subtle exfoliation without causing excessive irritation, promoting skin renewal and addressing hyperpigmentation for a brighter complexion.
