Weight loss may feel like an ongoing, never-ending mission to lose the
unwanted kilos or sustain results you have already achieved.

At times, a ceiling can be reached that prevents us from seeing further weight loss results no matter how much more sweat we shed, calories we burn or temptations we avoid. This ceiling is often referred to as a weight-loss plateau, and it can be frustrating for those trying to not only hit a target number on the scale but achieve an ideal body profile.

If you are facing a plateau, you might be the perfect candidate for liposuction, a surgical procedure that eliminates the problem spots you have not been able to get rid of on your own.

The benefits of liposuction

Liposuction is slowly but surely becoming one of the most sought out cosmetic procedures in Australia due to the numerous benefits it can bring. These benefits include:

  • It is safe – Liposuction is one of the safest cosmetic surgical procedures performed. With only tiny incisions being made, patients often recover quicker and are at less risk of developing complications.
  • Permanently remove fat cells – Once the fat cells are removed from pockets of stubborn fat, they will not regrow. However, keep in mind that because fat cells are removed from one area of your body, does not mean that you can’t gain fat in another. If we don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle, remaining cells can expand and build up as unwanted fat.
  • Health improvement – Around 4 lbs of fat deposits can be removed using our liposuction procedure. This can help you move closer to your desired ideal weight, and motivate you to maintain your new, healthier physique.
  • Boost your confidence and self-esteem – By removing unsightly fat deposits, you will gain a more contoured body shape, boosting your self-esteem and changing the way others perceive you.
  • Remove stubborn fat that doesn’t budge with diet and exercise –  As we all know by now, you can’t target weight loss to one area using diet and exercise. Sometimes the fat just won’t budge. Liposuction is often undergone by individuals who are healthy and physically active but can’t seem to lose unwanted excess fat.

Types of Liposuction

There are a few different liposuction procedures currently performed. However, they all involve the use of a cannula (thin tube) that is connected to a vacuum to suck excess fat out of your body.

This is the most common liposuction technique. Dr. Ansari will inject a sterile solution into the targeted area. This solution consists of salt water, lidocaine (local anaesthetic), and epinephrine. This helps numb the area and make the fat firm, making it easier to suction out.

Ultrasound uses sound wave energy to heat and rupture the cells. This in turn liquifies the fat, making it easier to suction out.

Doctors can use a burst of energy from a laser to heat and liquify the fat before it is suctioned out.

Areas that can be treated using Liposuction

With over 9 years of extensive surgical training around the globe, Dr. Ansari has helped his clients achieve their body goals using the most innovative vaper liposuction procedures to remove fat in the following areas:

  • Abdomen – Some surgeons may divide the abdomen into “upper” and “lower” regions, which are often treated separately. The lower region is responsible for a ”muffin-top” look, whereas the upper area can hold areas of stubborn fat.
  • Hips (Love Handles) – For women, a shaped hips is important in defining a feminine silhouette. For men, the formation of “love handles” can reduce confidence and bring down self esteem.
  • Thighs (inner and outer thighs) – All sections of the thigh (inner thigh, outer thigh, and the posterior thigh) can be treated using liposuction to aesthetically enhance the shape of your legs and give your buttocks a firmer appearance.
  • Buttocks – Although some fat is often desirable in the buttocks, removing excess fat can minimize unsightly dimpling.
  • Arms – As we age, our skin loosens and can form “bat-wings” in the upper arm. Liposuction can help smooth and tighten the area, promising a more youthful appearance.
  • Back – Liposuction can effectively reduce back rolls, sometimes called “bra rolls”.
  • Chin – Liposuction can be used alongside various facial contouring procedures to remove excess fat in the cheeks and chin.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction may be worth considering for those who have been actively losing weight, but are unsatisfied with the results. So what is the criteria for the ideal candidate?

Weight – Paradoxically, the best candidates for liposuction are those who are not that overweight but have an area of fat that just won’t shift, despite how much exercise or dieting they do. It is unsafe to remove large volumes of fat in one treatment. Therefore, it is best to be within 30% of your ideal body weight before considering liposuction.

Skin – Any age can be appropriate for liposuction, but the younger the individual, the greater the skin elasticity and its capacity to reposition following treatment.

Smoking – Nicotine works as a vasoconstrictor meaning that your healing process is restricted due to a decrease in blood flow. If you smoke, it is recommended you try and quit before your liposuction.

Good general health – Liposuction is still a surgery and therefore requires patients to have a good general health. Our team will carry out preoperative checks to ensure that your vitals are within the appropriate range.

Expect realistic results – It is essential you understand how your results will look. Browsing through various before and after images can help give you an idea of what to expect.

The liposuction procedure can provide patients with stunning results that lasts and lasts with care – enhancing self-esteem and motivation. Before we know it – summer will be here in an instant! So why not plan ahead?

A consultation with Dr Ansari will provide full insights into the options most suitable for your lifestyle that best suits your body type, as well as the opportunity to discuss your goals.

How is the liposuction
procedure done?

There are many liposuction techniques. However, the procedural steps remain the same. The liposuction procedure is performed following these steps:

Step One – Consultation – Book your consultation when you feel ready to undergo the liposuction procedure. You can discuss the benefits and limitations of the procedure with your Doctor, and use this time as an opportunity to ask any questions.

Step Two – Anesthesia – This cosmetic procedure involves the use of a local anaesthetic. During tumescent liposuction, your surgeon will inject a sterile solution containing a local anaesthetic. This helps reduce pain and make it easier for the fat to be removed.

Step Three- Incisions – Your surgeon will then make tiny inconspicuous incisions in the targeted area. The incisions are small enough to allow for the vacuum cannula to pass through. Multiple incisions may be placed depending on the amount of fat to be suctioned.

Step Four – Removing fat – The cannula is then placed through these incisions and a gentle backwards and forwards motion dislodges the fat. The fat is then sucked through the vacuum pump. Surgeons may use ultrasound or laser liposuction for increased precision.

Step Five – Closing the wound – Once the fat is sucked out, the wounds are closed using absorbable sutures. Drainage tubes are placed to collect any excess fluid. Most patients can return to their jobs within three to four days. You will need to wear a pressure garment for three to six weeks to reduce bruising and swelling and encourage the skin to contract to the new body shape.

Usually the overlying skin will contract following suction lipectomy, however in some circumstances a skin-tightening procedure also be required if skin elasticity is lacking.

What can you expect after Liposuction

Like any other cosmetic surgery procedure, the time taken for the results to show varies between individuals. However, most people will start noticing a difference three months after their liposuction procedure.

You may feel a little bit sleepy after your procedure, until the sedation wears off. You will feel some pain and discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe some pain relief medications to help alleviate the pain.

The areas which have had fat removed will remain swollen for around a week. Swelling can stay for up to six weeks. A compression garment will be provided to you to help reduce swelling.

Pain should subside after four weeks, but you may still have some residual swelling at the incision sites. Your surgeon should recommend to you some light exercises, but you should still avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.

Between six weeks and three months after your liposuction, you should start noticing your initial results. The areas targeted should appear smoother and more contoured, but you may notice a little bit of scarring which is normal. Keep your scars well moisturised and away from the sun, and enjoy your new body.

Some of the most frequently asked questions regarding liposuction are answered below.

Liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy diet and a regular exercise program. However, it is an excellent strategy for removing unwanted localised fat deposits and bulges, which are resistant to diet and exercise, creating a lasting and enhanced body contour.

Liposuction works on the principle that people are born with a defined number of fat cells. This means that if you become fatter, your individual fat cells become fatter, rather than multiplying (not totally true with extreme obesity).

Thus, if you have body fat deposits that produce an undesired contour (e.g.“pot belly” or “saddlebag thighs” in females or “love handles” in males), then these can be permanently changed or limited by removal of the fat cells.

The maximum amount of fat that can be removed safely using liposuction is between 6-8 lbs. This equates to 3-4 litres. If more fat is to be removed, the individual may require follow-up liposuction procedures.

Depending on the extent of your procedure, liposuction may last anywhere from one to three hours. Keep in mind this is only the surgical time, however. Patients need to allocate a full day to allow for the preoperative workup, the surgery and post-operative care.

Because of the small size of the incisions (less than 1cm), scars are not usually significant after liposuction. Any scarring that does occur will fade over time, albeit there is some variation from individual to individual.

Although side effects vary from one person to another, in general, significant bruising and swelling are common. Dr. Ansari will follow all clinical protocols to ensure that risk is reduced, but unfortunately, the risk cannot be reduced to zero.

The most common liposuction complications include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Formation of irregular contours
  • Poor wound healing

Dr Ansari will discuss the side effects and any potential complications directly with you at your initial consultation.

If you gain weight after your procedure, you will see changes to your body. While you won’t selectively regain the contour that was corrected during liposuction, fat deposits will be distributed around the body, including the areas treated with your procedure.

Not really, as twilight sedation and a tumescent local anaesthetic are the preferred methods of most surgeons who perform liposuction. This is because of a reduced risk of complications with this type of sedation, which also results in a faster recovery.

With a tumescent technique, a large volume of fluid and local aesthetic are infused, which allows the area to become fully numb, so that your liposuction can be performed without any major discomfort. This method also provides good pain relief after your operation. However, if you prefer to have the procedure under general anaesthesia, this can be arranged.

A liposuction is deemed successful when the surgeon and patient are both happy with the results. The surgeon’s goal is to obtain an optimal aesthetic result, rather than to maximise the amount of fat removed. One of the most common causes for disappointment in the results of liposuction is the removal of too much fat, which produces an abnormal or unusual appearance.

It is important for you to recognise that the cosmetic success of liposuction is often the result of removing an amount of fat needed to provide pleasing, aesthetic results. It is not about taking out as much fat as possible, but to achieve an aesthetically desired result. That’s why sometimes it is called a liposculpture procedure.

Liposuction improves the silhouette of your body but is not effective in eliminating the puckering of the skin frequently associated with cellulite. While the appearance may be reduced to some degree, it is unlikely to produce a significant improvement.

Dimpling and indentations in the skin is a known risk of liposuction, however, skin irregularities are unusual in the hands of a skilled surgeon. The use of large diameter cannulas tends to increase the risk of irregularities.

Dr Ansari uses fine cannulas (micro cannulas), requiring more operative time and more surgical effort, but reducing the risk of indentations and creating smoother results.

Because the incisions are so small (less than 1 cm), scars are not usually significant after this procedure. Any scarring that does occur will fade over time, although there is some variation from individual to individual.

Dr Ansari is an experienced surgeon who is dedicated to helping patients achieve the results they desire.
