Abdominoplasty Surgery

Consultations in Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle & Erina

Abdominoplasty surgery is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying muscles.
Patients have an option between a full or mini abdominoplasty surgery procedure. However, a thorough consultation should be prioritised first to know which of these two options suit you considering other factors that may also affect your procedure.

Tummy liposuction may also be performed alongside abdominoplasty depending on the clinical assessment and treatment plan.

Information On Abdominoplasty Surgery

Surgical abdominoplasty holds more than just providing cosmetic benefits, but also functional benefits as well. If you’re someone who is concerned about their excess skin, loose abdominal muscles or excess fat, here are some key reasons why getting abdominoplasty may be worth considering in your case:

  • May tighten the abdominal muscles
  • Remove excess skin after weight loss
  • May eliminate stretch marks
May support in strengthening your core to assist improved posture
  • May help to minimise symptoms of post-pregnancy stress urinary incontinence by tightening muscles around the abdomen, pelvic floor and urethra.
  • Minimises the risk factor for diseases such as diabetes, gallbladder disease and cardiovascular issues linked with carrying excess fat around the abdomen.

Best Candidates for abdominoplasty

Both men and women may undergo an abdominoplasty procedure. However, it is a requirement that the candidate should be in good health first.

Other than that, the best candidates for this type of procedure may include:

  • Women who have loose muscles and excess skin in the abdominal area after pregnancies
  • Men or women who have managed to lose a significant amount of weight but are left with saggy or excess skin and fat deposits around the abdomen.
  • Men or women who due to age or other natural factors have stubborn fat and excess skin around the abdomen.

Ā

While some of these may be good candidates for surgical abdominoplasty, a thorough consultation with our practitioners should be required first to fully evaluate your concerns, goals, medical history, and prescribe the most suitable procedure for you.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) options

Different Types of Abdominoplasty

There are two different types of abdominoplasty that the patient may opt for depending on their condition and desired outcome. However, a consultation is still a requirement to understand your concerns better.

Mini Abdominoplasty

This type of procedure is suitable for patients who only need to have a small amount of skin removed from the abdominal region. It may also help if you have minimal excess fat below the belly button.

A mini abdominoplasty is said to leave less scarring and has lesser recovery time since it is less invasive. The procedure also involves a smaller incision so the results of a mini abdominoplasty will not be as dramatic as a full abdominoplasty.

Full Abdominoplasty

Full abdominoplasty is typically suitable for patients with a considerable bulge around the abdominal region, lax abdominal muscles and sagging skin. An extended abdominoplasty procedure also involves the relocation of the belly button and reconstruction of the underlying muscles to create smoother and firmer abdominal muscles.

Regardless of whether you’re opting for full or mini abdominoplasty, it is still required to have a one-on-one consultation with our practitioners to understand your case better. We may also be able to help you determine if a liposuction is also suitable for you.

How is the abdominoplasty surgery performed?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical or invasive procedure that is typically performed under general anaesthesia. The approach and technique used may vary depending on individual anatomy and the specific goals discussed during your consultation.

In general, an abdominoplasty surgery is done with an incision that will be made across your lower abdomen from one side of your hip bone to the other. Once the incision is made, your practitioner will systematically remove excess skin, tissue and fat and tighten your abdominal muscles if clinically indicated.

Recovering From
Abdominoplasty Surgery

Potential side effects of abdominoplasty, includes some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort during the initial stages of recovery. However, your practitioner at My Cosmetic Clinic will provide appropriate post-operative care instructions, which may include pain management and the use of compression garments to support the surgical area and aid healing.

Our surgical abdominoplasty patients in our clinic are generally advised to avoid high-impact activities such as running or strenuous exercise for several weeks following the procedure to ensure optimal recovery. Depending on the nature of your work and your recovery progress, your practitioner may also advise when you can return to daily activities.

It is important to follow all post-operative instructions to support healing and minimise the risk of complications. Our team will also discuss these potential side effects and what the recovery part looks like during your initial consultation with us

Maintaining Procedure Results

After the abdominoplasty surgery, the treated area will not expand again unless a healthy weight is maintained. Pregnancy can also alter abdominoplasty results, so it is best for female patients to have the procedure after they are done having children.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can learn more about abdominoplasty in the answers to frequently asked questions below.

WILL I NEED A GP REFERAL?

Yes. A GP referral will be required for your first consultation.Ā This can easily be obtained from your local GP.

On average it takes 4 to 8 weeks to recover from abdominoplasty surgery. Recovery times tend to be shorter for mini abdominoplasty since it is less invasive. Your recovery period will also depend on how extensive the abdominoplasty procedure was.

Abdominoplasty results are permanent because the excess skin and excess fat cells removed during the procedure cannot grow back. However, it is important to maintain a healthy weight after abdominoplasty surgery to maintain firm and smooth abdominal muscles.

Non-surgical abdominoplasty treatments cannot give you the same significance as a abdominoplasty surgery because they do not have any effect on the underlying abdominal muscles and fascia.

Although very unlikely, there are instances where your health insurance company might cover the cost of anaesthesia or hospital admission fees. Check with your insurance company before you schedule your procedure.

Nearly all abdominoplastyĀ  procedures involve incisions across your lower abdomen which will leave a scar above the pubic hairline. You may also have a scar around your navel if your belly button is repositioned during your surgery.

Around two to three weeks after your surgery, you can begin to apply silicone sheeting or gel to your incision. These products have a proven track record of improving the healing of scars.

Stretch marks located in your lower abdomen will be shifted downward as the skin is relocated. Any remaining stretch marks are tightened and smoothed to some extent, but not necessarily eliminated.

Abdominoplasty removes some cellulite, but it may not eliminate cellulite entirely. Weight loss in conjunction with a tummy tuck is often the most effective way to reduce cellulite.

Women can have healthy, full-term pregnancies after abdominoplasty surgery. However, most plastic practitioners recommend having a tummy tuck procedure after you have finished having children to ensure that the results of the tummy tuck are permanent.

A comprehensive consultation is required to determine if you are a suitable candidate for this procedure. Your practitioner will discuss the potential risks and benefits with you.

Abdominoplasty surgery can often be combined with liposuction to ensure that excess skin and fat are removed from the thighs and flanks as well as the abdomen. However, the doctor will advise on whether you can combine abdominoplasty with another procedure based on your condition.
