Everyone’s aging process is different; including how they feel about the changes they see in the mirror. If you’re becoming increasingly unhappy and disheartened with the subtle or not-so-subtle ways your face is telling you you’re a year older, it may be time to talk about your options with a medical professional. Call My Cosmetic Clinic in Newcastle, NSW to discuss how a facelift could be the solution you’re looking for.

What Is a Facelift?

We all know the terminology, but what really happens during the procedure? A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to help patients achieve a more youthful appearance. The goal is to reduce sagging or folding of the cheeks and jawline while smoothing out other age-related changes in that area of the face.

During a typical procedure, a flap of skin on each side of the face is pulled back and the tissues and fat underneath are sculpted or removed by the surgeon to achieve the desired contour and more youthful shape. The muscles of the face will also be lifted to restore a firmer structure to the face.

Before the flaps are closed, all the excess skin is removed. There are several techniques a surgeon can use depending on the concerns being addressed and the outcome desired. Each surgeon has their preference and may even have a signature style in the way they perform this surgery.

Why Would I Get a Facelift?

There are many reasons to consider this kind of procedure and each is deeply personal and individual. The most common reason people give for getting a facelift is that they’re no longer happy or comfortable with what they see in the mirror. Our face is the most recognizable part of our bodies and can define our appearance, so when what we see in the mirror doesn’t match how we feel internally, our self-esteem can drop and our self-image can become muddied.

If you no longer like to have your picture taken, find that clothing you used to wear doesn’t “cover-up” enough of your jawline or makeup no longer feels attractive on you, it’s absolutely worth opening a conversation with your surgeon about what this procedure could do for you. If you want to look like a refreshed and naturally younger version of yourself, this could be a good fit.

Many people explore getting a facelift when their daily skincare routine no longer has a positive effect on their skin or the spa services they receive that used to provide a bit of a lift now fall flat. There comes a time in everyone’s life when their skin’s elasticity no longer holds up to their daily life. A healthy motivation for wanting this procedure is to feel better in your own skin, have more confidence and restore a more youthful and happier outlook on yourself and life.

What Age Is Appropriate for This Procedure?

Most facelifts happen between the ages of 40 and 70, although most surgeons would agree that it’s better to consider the set of age-related issues and not a specific age when deciding if this is right for you. There are patients younger than 40 who have had major weight fluctuations that have left them with more sagging skin than most people their age. In this case, a younger patient would be a good candidate for this procedure.

On the other hand, somebody who is 50 and has lived well, having always taken care of their skin, may not be a good candidate because the results they want can’t be achieved through surgery.

It comes down to having a qualified surgeon who understands your motivation for wanting surgery, listens to your expected outcomes and conducts an examination of your areas of concern. There is no magical age for which this procedure is universally appropriate or inappropriate—each potential client is different.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates for this procedure are adult men and women who want to improve their appearance. If you’re struggling with sagging skin of the face and neck and have realistic expectations, you could benefit from a lift. It’s important that each candidate is in good physical and emotional health and understands what real results look like.

A facelift won’t help you achieve perfection. There is no such thing. You also won’t end up looking like your favorite celebrity. But it will help you achieve an improved, more youthful appearance.

Only your surgeon can decide if a facelift will provide the results you’re looking for based on your areas of concern. If this isn’t the right procedure for you, there are many other treatments and procedures that can be recommended to address the issues bothering you.

What to Expect

After your consultation, if you and your surgeon have decided this will be the most beneficial procedure for you, you’ll have an opportunity to see before and after pictures so you can understand the results you can expect. Your surgeon will outline the surgery he’ll perform and how he’ll achieve the results you’ve discussed.

Then you should ask any questions you have and voice any concerns. You’ll be given detailed pre-operative instructions and information about what to do on the morning of your surgery. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis, so you can return home later that same day. Follow all your doctor’s post-care instructions and always call with any questions that pop up afterward.

Are There Different Facelifts?

We’ve been discussing the traditional, or full, lift. There are two other lifts to discuss with your surgeon—the mini lift and the thread lift.

Mini-Lift

A mini-lift is a less invasive version of a full lift. It’s appropriate for people with mild-to-moderate signs of aging, including jowls and sagging skin, who want a firmer and lifted lower face area. If the sagging and excess skin in their face can be addressed by suspending the skin and tissues immediately in front of their ears, a mini-lift can be a viable option for them.

There is a shorter recovery time with a mini-lift and often little to no pre-operative testing. The results are different on the same scale, too. This lift is designed to tighten the lower half of the face, focusing mostly on the jawline and jowls. A traditional lift focuses on smoothing the neck and removing excess skin. While some tightening under the chin can be achieved with a mini-lift, it’s not as effective on moderate or severe skin laxity.

The results of a mini-lift last between two and six years, while a full lift can last a decade or more. No procedure stops the aging process, so taking care of your skin and enjoying a healthy lifestyle can prolong your positive results.

The Thread Lift

A thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure that provides a lift for the face, neck, and jowls. Threads that have small graspers on them are passed under the skin with a special needle. The graspers grab hold of the skin from underneath the surface, which re-suspends the skin in a lifted and more youthful position.

Thread technology has come a long way since its inception. The threads now used are dissolvable which means there’s less chance of bacteria becoming a problem. The upside to a thread lift is how relatively inexpensive it is upfront, making it a great option for someone not ready to pay for the expense of a full or mini-lift but who would still like their mild sagging and excess skin to be less noticeable.

Thread lifts’ results are short lived compared to traditional lifts. It’s a good option for someone looking for an easy and less expensive facial rejuvenation option but who is also ready to accept less dramatic results for a shorter time.

Other Anti-Aging Treatments

After discussing these procedures with your surgeon, you may find some of your areas of concern may come with different recommendations. Not every aging concern can be addressed through one of these procedures.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

If you struggle with lines and wrinkles but want a subtle approach to achieving natural-looking results, these injectables can help you smooth out dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles caused by the repetitive movement of the muscles we consistently use to make facial expressions. Made of a purified protein, these injectables act as neuromodulators to block the nerve’s signal from reaching specific muscles.

When a muscle’s ability to move is inhibited or stopped, the muscle relaxes and the skin covering it can smooth out. Those wrinkles will soften and blur, creating a younger and more naturally smooth appearance. The relaxed muscle also means the constant compression of the skin stops, which prevents the wrinkles from deepening.

This treatment is effective in several areas where a modification of how muscle moves can improve appearances. For instance, if you suffer from a “gummy smile”—showing more of your gums above your teeth when you smile than you’d like, changing those muscles’ movements can keep your lips from rising too much on either side when you smile. Other areas that can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections include:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Puckering lines around the mouth
  • Sagging skin on the side of the mouth
  • Chin creases and dimpling
  • Bunny lines at the top of the nose

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are an effective and popular treatment to fill moderate-to-severe wrinkles and folds while restoring volume to the face in areas where age has diminished its structure. As collagen diminishes, it creates areas of fallen or lost volume. Collagen is the protein responsible for youthful skin’s strong structure. As voids form, our skin falls to fill in those areas, creating wrinkles and hollow areas.

Dermal fillers can lift areas of the face that have fallen or fill out thinning areas with no surgery. Because many fillers are made of hyaluronic acid—the natural sugar your body produces to lubricate and hydrate your skin—the results are soft and natural-looking, enhancing your own aesthetic and restoring youthful volume.

When used skillfully, dermal fillers can address many areas of concern without more invasive treatments that require downtime. Talk to your doctor about dermal fillers and how they can address:

  • Thinning lips
  • Vertical lip lines
  • Loss of volume in the cheek, temporal or cheekbone areas
  • Laugh lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Under-eye circles and tear troughs
  • Marionette lines
  • Other wrinkles and creases
