Sagging skin and wrinkles are a part of ageing, which creeps up on us no matter what we do. It’s usually the face, hands and neck that show the signs first because of factors like skin thinness, expression lines and exposure to environmental factors. Loss of collagen and elastin also contribute to loose skin and wrinkles. Skincare products and a healthy lifestyle can only go so far as to slow down the signs of ageing. Eventually, you need a tangible and effective solution. This is where a facelift comes in. It’s a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess skin and tighten the rest for a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. If you’ve been thinking about getting a facelift surgery to take the years off your face and are unsure about the procedure, we’re here to help. Learn more about facelift surgery, from the different types to the benefits, in our blog.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, medically known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that helps rejuvenate the face, addressing sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and other signs of ageing. It involves tightening and repositioning the facial tissues and muscles and removing excess skin to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

A facelift is an invasive procedure and is performed with local anaesthetic or twilight sedation. Even though you can usually leave on the same day, proper aftercare and a recovery period is needed to ensure optimal healing. The surgery and aftercare details will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

Some of the issues a facelift can help with include:

  • Sagging skin
  • Deep wrinkles and folds
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Tighten jowls (sagging skin below the jawline)
  • Loose neck skin and Muscles
  • Facial contour irregularities
  • Overall facial rejuvenation

The ideal facelift candidates are men or women seeking to improve their sagging facial and neck skin. You should be physically and psychologically healthy and have realistic expectations of the surgery. A facelift can only tighten your skin, not change your appearance or remove superficial wrinkles or sun damage. Each person’s result varies according to the condition of their skin and the type of facelift they opt for.

Benefits of a Facelift

The benefits of a facelift include:

  • A facelift can enhance the face’s overall appearance by tightening and lifting sagging skin, restoring a more youthful and defined facial contour.
  • A facelift can smooth out deep wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines) and marionette lines, by repositioning underlying facial tissues and removing excess skin.
  • The procedure can also tighten loose facial muscles, particularly in the lower face and neck, addressing concerns like jowls and neck laxity.
  • A facelift can restore lost facial volume by redistributing fat or using techniques such as fat grafting, helping to address hollowed or sunken areas of the face.
  • While not permanent, the results of a facelift are long-lasting, providing patients with a rejuvenated appearance that can last for many years.
  • By improving facial aesthetics and restoring a more youthful appearance, a facelift can make you feel and look more comfortable and satisfied with your appearance.
  • When performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, a facelift can produce natural-looking results that gracefully complement the patient’s facial features and age.
  • Beyond addressing specific signs of ageing, a facelift can provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation, improving overall facial harmony and balance.

Types of Facelift Procedures

There are several different types of facelift procedures, each tailored to address specific concerns and achieve desired outcomes:

Traditional Facelift (Full Facelift)

This is the most comprehensive type of facelift, targeting the entire face, including the lower face, jawline, and neck. It involves making incisions along the hairline and around the ears to lift and tighten the underlying tissues, remove excess skin, and smooth out wrinkles.

During a traditional facelift procedure, the surgeon makes incisions that start at the temples, extend along the hairline, and continue around the ears and possibly into the lower scalp. Once the incisions are made, the facial skin and underlying muscles are lifted and repositioned to correct sagging and drooping. Excess skin is trimmed away, and the remaining skin is carefully draped over the newly tightened face and neck contours. The incisions are closed with sutures, and any excess skin is trimmed away. The result is a smoother, firmer, and tighter appearance to the lower face, jawline, and neck.

Recovery from a traditional facelift typically takes several weeks, during which time you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Most patients can resume normal activities within two to three weeks, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks.

Mini Facelift (Limited Incision Facelift)

The mini facelift is a less invasive alternative to the traditional facelift, focusing on the lower face and jawline. It involves smaller incisions and is ideal for people with mild to moderate signs of ageing. These incisions are made around the ears and may extend into the hairline or along the skin’s natural creases. There’s minimal scarring and a shorter recovery period. However, this type of facelift is mostly suitable for the lower face area, such as sagging jowls and wrinkles.

Mid-Facelift

This procedure targets the middle portion of the face, including the cheeks and lower eyelids. It is designed to lift and restore volume to the cheeks, reduce nasolabial folds (smile lines), and improve overall facial contour.

Small incisions are made within the hairline or inside the lower eyelids during the procedure. The underlying tissue is lifted and repositioned to help restore volume to the cheeks and smooth out wrinkles and folds. A mid-facelift is suitable for people who want to tighten skin from the upper mouth to the eye area and remove the sunken, hollow look near the eyes.

Neck Lift

While not technically a facelift, a neck lift is often performed with a facelift to address sagging skin and excess fat in the neck area. It involves making incisions under the chin or behind the ears to tighten the neck muscles and remove excess skin for a more defined and contoured look.

Thread Lift

A thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that helps lift and tighten sagging facial tissues. During the procedure, dissolvable threads with tiny cones or barbs are strategically inserted under the skin through small incisions. These threads are gently pulled to lift the skin, providing a subtle yet effective rejuvenation. The threads also stimulate collagen production, improving skin elasticity over time. Thread lifts are commonly used to address sagging in the midface, jowls, and neck areas, offering a non-surgical alternative to a traditional facelift. While the results are not as dramatic or long-lasting as a surgical facelift, thread lifts provide a more natural-looking lift with minimal downtime.
