Not every woman feels satisfied with their natural breasts which is why breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures in the cosmetic surgery industry, it also comes with the highest patient satisfaction rate. At My Cosmetic Clinic in Sydney, NSW, we understand every individual has unique concerns when it comes to their body, and we are committed to ensuring our clients understand everything involved in getting the results they desire.

The Basics

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can alter the size, shape, and symmetry of breasts. Results are achieved by surgically inserting breast implants chosen to fit with the client’s body structure, breast shape, and desired outcome.

Why Is It Done?

There are many reasons why people choose to change the shape of their breasts. Many women find a successful procedure improves their self-esteem. Some would like to effectively correct asymmetrical breasts. Others may have lost volume due to a number of reasons, including weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and age.

How Is It Performed?

Breast augmentation surgery involves inserting an implant in either of two ways. The implant can be inserted under the breast tissue and above the chest muscle (submammary) or under both breast tissue and muscle (subpectoral). Usually, the insertion is done by a small incision along the breast crease underneath each breast.

The incision can also be done in the armpit or around the areola. During your consultation, you and the surgeon will decide the most appropriate approach and choose which implants will best suit your desired outcome.

The Consultation

You’ve spent a serious amount of time researching and thinking about having breast augmentation and you’ve decided to go ahead, the next step is to book an initial consultation with your chosen surgeon.

During this consultation, your surgeon will answer any and all of your questions. You will explain the results you want to achieve from the surgery and together you and your surgeon will make a series of decisions based on your desires. These decisions will help to create a surgical plan that best serves your unique body and aesthetic goals.

During your consultation, you will have several decisions to make based on your desired outcome. Your surgeon will talk you through the entire process and assist you in deciding which options will work best for your unique body.

Size and Shape

Taking into account your unique body composition and your goals, your doctor will discuss the size and shape of the implants that will work best for you. Every human body is unique and therefore, the same implants can look completely different in two different women. Together, you will make the choice that will best achieve your goal aesthetic of fuller breasts, whilst ensuring the final result doesn’t compromise a natural appearance.

Generally, implants are either round or teardrop shapes. Your choice will determine the shape of your breasts after the procedure. Round implants are the most common shape and give the appearance of more fullness at the top of the breast. If you want to correct sagging or want a fuller look this type can work well. Teardrop implants offer a more natural look with the bottom fuller than the top of the breasts. This type of implant works well for women who want to achieve a very natural look.

In general, implants are soft and flexible and filled with either silicone or saline. Here at My Cosmetic Clinic, foamed silicone implants are our preferred choice for most clients. Silicone-filled implants tend to have a more natural feel and weight. However, each client has individual needs, and Dr Ansari will discuss all your options and guide you in making the best decision.

There are many factors to consider when choosing the position of your breast implants and these will be discussed thoroughly with your doctor. In short, above muscle implants are generally more popular for women who have plenty of natural breast tissue. For those with little natural breast tissue, below breast options may be the better option.

The Procedure

Now you’ve had an in-depth consultation with your surgeon, you understand the procedure and have made all the necessary decisions to achieve your final results, it is time for the procedure.

The Surgery

For clients of My Cosmetic Clinic, breast augmentation surgery is usually performed in an accredited hospital in Sydney. Your surgeon will have given you pre-operation instructions, and these can include stopping smoking in the weeks leading up to the procedure and not eating or drinking in the hours specified before the surgery. The procedure will most likely be performed under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain.

By separating the breast tissue from your chest tissue and muscle, your surgeon will create a pocket. In this pocket, your surgeon will insert your implants and fit them into the correct position. Once implants are successfully placed, the incision will be closed with stitches and then securely bandaged. The procedure can last anywhere between one to two hours.

After the Surgery

After your surgery, you will be monitored until doctors are satisfied you are ready to go home. The recovery period typically lasts around eight weeks, however, you should be able to return to work shortly after the procedure. The staff at My Cosmetic Clinic will provide you with post-surgery guidelines to minimalize these side effects. We recommend sleeping in a reclining position, as this can help ease swelling by moving fluid away from the breast area.

For the first two to three weeks all strenuous activity should be limited. Light exercise may be possible around week six but that is dependant on each individual. Generally, after around eight weeks most clients are back to their normal selves and routines.
